Knitting and Crochet Library Research Guide

This Research Guide is dedicated to providing resources for every knitter or crocheter at any step of their process. It should be useful to anyone attempting to find guides on how to knit or crochet in the first place, how to learn new kinds of stitches, how to find patterns, how to create patterns, and how to connect with other knitters and crocheters.

This guide will use words related to knitting and crochet, so please see definitions here:

  • Knitting: The process of using two or more needles to form fabric through concentric looping of yarn.
  • Crochet: The process of using a hook to form fabric through concentric looping of yarn.
  • Pattern: The instruction guides for how to recreate a knit or crochet item. Usually written out line-by-line, frequently using abbreviations for each kind of stitch.
  • Charts: Graphical depictions of patterns.
  • Stitches: Incremental increases in the process of creating an overall work. Each stitch is a knot or loop that is interconnected with one or more other stitches.
